Gardener’s tips
■ Position ground-level
lights
in such a way that
they almost peep out of
the plants surrounding
them. This softens the
glare, but still exposes
just enough light.
■ Add more aesthetic
interest
by varying the
types of lighting you
use and their placement.
You can ‘paint’ with light
so the garden becomes
an entirely new place at
night - wonderful to see
and contemplate.
■ Place a spotlight
in
front of a tree trunk to
create an interesting
shadow on the fence or
wall. You can also shine
the spotlight up a tree
trunk to highlight the
vertical accent it creates.
■ Always ground
outdoor lights
and make
sure the fixtures are rated
as ‘water resistant/UL
approved’ for outdoor
use. Lights designed for
indoor use should never
be used outdoors.
4,5. To light up the entrance to your
garden, you can go down the route of
LED path lights. They are a great
decorative feature to make the garden
more inviting in the evening, and they
are delightfully easy to install.
Simply connect the leads
together and hook it up to
a transformer, which reduces
the house power supply to
a 12V system. And unlike
most lights, these LEDs
generate very little heat, so
they’re energy efficient and
cool to touch. 12V Extra
Low Voltage LED Georgian
Pathlight Kit, $90/5pk.
7,8. Nothing beats the beautiful atmosphere created by the warm glow of
a naked flame. But the wind can blow out the flame easily, and the black smoke
and smell of burning fuel can be off-putting. You'll have none of those problems
with Flame in a Can - an outdoor ‘candle’ that is spill proof, wind
resistant and doesn’t give off an unpleasant
odour. You can use it as is, encase it within

a decorative Fire Pot or put it in a
container of your choice. Flame in a
